Today our kindergarteners finished up our CKLA Nursery Rhymes and Fables unit. As a culminating activity for this unit, we had a nursery rhymes olympics. The students portrayed Jack and Jill carrying a pail of water up the hill. They portrayed the mouse in Hickory Dickory Dock and ran up the clock. They were "Jack" and pretended to be nimble and quick and jump over the candle stick. They helped Little Bo peep look for her sheep. They put Humpty Dumpty back together again. They all fell down and made a Ring Around the Rosey. They had a race as they portrayed the Tortoise and the Hare and learned that slow and steady really does "win the race."
All the students had so much fun acting out these nursery rhymes and fables. We have really dug deep into each nursery rhyme these first few weeks of school, learning the meanings of unfamiliar words in each one, gaining background knowledge, making predictions, identifying what's real and what's make believe, identifying characters and main events, describing details and so much more! We are certain that our students will always remember these nursery rhymes and today, learning through play, these nursery rhymes and fables came alive for students!
