Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Heather Cornett back to Owsley County Schools! We are excited to welcome Mrs. Cornett back to where her career in education began. She is returning to Owsley County Elementary School to begin her 17th year in education, serving as both a Social Studies teacher and school counselor. A message from Mrs. Cornett: “I look forward to helping students grow not only academically, but also as confident, compassionate individuals. I can’t wait to build meaningful relationships with our students and families and be part of another great year at OCES.” Welcome home, Mrs. Cornett! Please join us in welcoming Ms. Abby Oliver back home to Owsley County High School as our new Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor! An OCHS alumna, former FFA Chapter President, and Regional Secretary, Ms. Oliver is returning to the place that helped shape her passion for agriculture and leadership. We are excited to have her investing in the next generation of Owsley County students. A message from Ms. Oliver: “I am very excited to be the new Agriculture Teacher at Owsley County High School! This will be my sixth year in education, and I have previously taught at Lee County Elementary and Owsley County Elementary School. Throughout my teaching experience, I have learned the importance of providing students with rigorous, engaging instruction, and I look forward to bringing that same approach to my agriculture classes. I am a strong advocate for hands-on, experience-based learning. Students will have opportunities to learn through our greenhouse, school farm, and other real-world agricultural experiences. I am also looking forward to helping grow our local FFA chapter. As a student at Owsley County High School, FFA played an important role in my own success. Now I have the opportunity to share those experiences with our current members and help them develop into confident leaders. I truly believe Owsley County students have the potential to become some of Kentucky’s greatest leaders, and I can’t wait to meet my students and begin this exciting new chapter.” Welcome home, Ms. Oliver! We are excited to have you leading our Agriculture program and FFA chapter.

At tonight’s Owsley County Board of Education meeting, we recognized Mrs. Melinda Creech on her retirement from Owsley County Elementary School. Also recognized, but not pictured, was Mrs. Shawnda Mason. Together, these two outstanding educators have made a lasting impact on our students, staff, and school community through their years of dedication and service. Congratulations to Mrs. Creech and Mrs. Mason! Thank you for everything you have done for Owsley County Schools, and we wish you both a happy and well deserved retirement.

The Owsley County School District is excited to welcome Mr. Brad Mullins as the new principal of Owsley County Elementary School. We are thrilled to have him join the OCES family and look forward to the leadership, experience, and dedication he will bring to our students, staff, and community.

The following message is from Mr. Mullins as he begins this new chapter with the OCES community.

"It is an honor and a privilege to join the Owsley County Elementary family as your new principal. With 25 years of experience in elementary education, including two years as assistant principal at Hunter Hills Elementary and the past 14 years serving as principal of Hazel Green Elementary, I have been blessed to work alongside outstanding students, dedicated educators, and supportive families. Those experiences have shaped my belief that every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment where they are challenged, encouraged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential.

As I begin this new journey, I look forward to partnering with our students, staff, families, and the entire Owsley County community to build upon the great traditions already in place. Together, we will work to ensure that every student receives the very best educational experience possible—one that promotes academic excellence, strong character, and a genuine love of learning. I am excited to get to know each of you, celebrate our successes together, and make Owsley County Elementary a place where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. I cannot wait to meet everyone and begin this exciting new chapter together."

Back-to-School Night – Save the Date!

To better accommodate families with students attending both Owsley County Elementary School and Owsley County Middle High School, Back-to-School Night for both schools will be held on the same evening at the same location.

Families will have the opportunity to:
✅ Meet teachers
✅ Pick up student schedules
✅ Visit with school staff and learn about the upcoming school year

After 10 years of dedicated service as principal of OCES, Mrs. Sylvia McIntosh is stepping into a new role as Literacy Coach at Owsley County Schools. While we are excited for her as she begins this new chapter, it is difficult to put into words the impact she has had on our school over the past decade. Her leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to students and staff have helped shape OCES into what it is today. Mrs. McIntosh leaves behind a legacy of compassion, rooted in her genuine love for children and education. She will certainly be missed in the principal’s office, but we are grateful that OCES will continue to benefit from her knowledge, experience, and passion in her new role. Please join us in congratulating Mrs. McIntosh and wishing her continued success as Literacy Coach.
