Three GEAR UP students had the opportunity to attend the American Heart Association's STEM Goes Red event at the EKU Manchester campus on Tuesday. The students solved mysteries, built robots, practiced CPR, and more. Thanks to the AHA, each one went home with a CPR practice kit!

The juniors and seniors had a STEM-packed week, last week! GEAR UP STEM coordinator Tami Herrell rounded out the week with a visit Friday, teaching students Bernoulli's Principle using toilet paper, water, cheese puffs, and ping pong balls. Students had a blast while learning!

This week with GEAR UP, OCHS juniors and seniors learned about converting potential energy to kinetic energy through the use of a simple machine. By using a mousetrap as their only source of power, students engineered cars that could go the distance!

On 3/14 OCHS students competed in Pi Day, a math challenge to recite the most digits of pi. Connor Patrick was our OCHS 1st place winner, with Shade McIntosh and Noah Shouse taking 2nd and 3rd place. In middle school, Katie Shipman was 1st place with Ginger Marshall and Gage Rodriguez finishing 2nd & 3rd. Great job students! 1st place winners received a coupon for a free BP pizza and 2nd/3rd a free Spencer's dessert!
