Burn the boats -- It's on this year's sports apparel, but how many of us truly know what it refers to?
In 1519, during the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, Hernan Cortez, the commander of the Spanish army, destroyed his ships so that basically his men would either have to win the battle or die.
There was no option of retreat. Take a minute and let that sink in. So what's the lesson, or meaning, here? Giving up or quitting is easy when either of those is an option. When you have a way out, it's easy to take it. But if you burn your boats, ie eliminate your excuses and safety nets, you stop getting in your own way.
If you burn your boats you destroy all possible ways of going back to where you were before.
